That Tuesday my truing stand fell off the bench and I had to fix a wheel by eye
I dropped the whole wheel setup when a clamp gave out, and after swearing for ten minutes I actually got the wheel straighter than my stand ever did. Has anyone else learned more from a total disaster than from any training video?

Had a buddy snap his frame jig in half mid-build, parts everywhere, beer can rolled under the workbench. He ended up using a level and a piece of string to get the alignment perfect, way better than that jig ever gave him. Sometimes breaking your tools is the real training.

That string trick works but only if you got a decent reference point to start from. A level on its own won't cut it for frame alignment unless you already know the frame is straight.

My 2014 Ford Focus frame jig snapped at the weld joint, dropped my buddy's project right on his foot. He was hopping around cussing, and I just stood there holding a beer can wondering if I should grab the string or the first aid kit first. Ended up using a 2x4 and some fishing line to square it up, took three hours but it came out straighter than the jig ever did. Makes you wonder if some of these fancy tools are just overengineered junk, or maybe I'm just trying to justify my own clumsiness.
