Showerthought: A broken spoke on a rear wheel taught me to check the hub flange before blaming the rim
Two Saturdays ago I was trueing a rear wheel on a commuter bike when I noticed one spoke was completely snapped at the elbow. I figured the rim was to blame since it had a flat spot, so I replaced the spoke and trued it up. A week later two more spokes went in the same area. That's when I pulled the wheel off and looked at the hub flange with a magnifying glass. There was a tiny crack starting at one of the spoke holes. I checked the other side and found a second one. The wheel had around 8,000 miles on it and the cheap hub just gave out. I ended up rebuilding it on a new hub with the same rim. Now I always run my finger around the flange holes before I touch a spoke. Has anyone else had a hub flange crack and try to blame the rim first?
