Serious question, does anyone else think torque wrenches are overrated for stem bolts?
Last week a customer brought in a 3 year old bike with a cracked carbon steerer tube, and he swore he'd used a torque wrench on the stem bolts. I checked his wrench with my beam tester and it was reading 2 Nm low at 5 Nm, so he'd been clamping way past spec the whole time and never knew. I've been hand tightening stems for 12 years in my shop in Boise and have never cracked a single one, and I trust my wrist more than most of the cheap clickers people bring in. A $40 wrench you never check is worse than no wrench at all. Anyway, curious what the rest of you do, do you check customer wrenches or just assume they're fine?
