Ran brake cables through the housing the wrong direction for 2 years until a guy at the shop in Tucson pointed at my ferrule
I always figured a cable's a cable and never checked the little arrow on the housing, so every rear derailleur I set up shifted like garbage on the downshift until he flipped it and it clicked through all 11 gears clean, and now I'm wondering how many other "bad" shifters I've replaced over nothing.
The "cable's a cable" thing gets so many people, but the part that messes with your head is that it still kinda works in the wrong direction, just sloppy. So you blame the shifter or the derailleur and start swapping parts. I'd bet half the "dead" shifters in people's junk bins were fine the whole time.
