My go-to chain lube was wrong for 6 months
I used to just grab whatever wet lube was on sale at the shop. Then a customer brought in a bike that had this nasty black paste all over the drivetrain. He told me he used the same stuff I was using. I checked my own chain and sure enough it was starting to gum up too. Switched to a dry wax lube after reading some posts on here and my drivetrain is way cleaner after 200 miles. Anyone else have a lube that worked great at first then turned into a mess?

Nobody checks if their lube is compatible with the local water minerals.

Bet you never actually over-lubed it. Most people drown their chains in wet lube every 50 miles then blame the product when it turns into grinding paste. Dry wax is fine for dry days but the second you hit rain or a puddle that stuff washes right off and leaves you with metal on metal. Keep using the wet stuff just wipe the chain down before you reapply and stop putting it on like you're seasoning a steak.
