Mountain bike shop in Moab warned me about cheap disc brake pads - wish I listened

I was at a shop called Poison Spider in Moab last month getting a pad swap before a big ride, and the mechanic told me my no-name organic pads would fade after one descent. Sure enough, halfway down Porcupine Ridge my brakes started feeling spongy and I almost went over the bars. Has anyone else had a shop call them out on using budget parts?

Respectfully, I gotta disagree on this one. Cheap organic pads are fine for casual riding but you’re asking for trouble on any real descent, especially in a place like Moab. Air in the line or a bad batch can happen, but that spongy fade is a classic sign of cheap pads overheating.

Oh man, I've had nothing but good luck with cheap organic pads even on big descents.

Honestly, I've run cheap pads on my hardtail for years and never had that kind of drama. I think a lot of it is just shop talk to sell you the expensive stuff. My buddy runs those $8 Amazon pads on his enduro bike and he's fine, even on long descents in Colorado. Maybe it was air in the line or you just got a bad batch?
