I thought the Park Tool spoke tension app was a gimmick until I rebuilt a wheel on my bench last Tuesday
A buddy who runs a shop in Tacoma kept telling me to ditch the pitch by ear method and use the tension meter app on my phone, and I basically rolled my eyes for a year. Then last Tuesday I was truing a 32 hole rear wheel off a beat up commuter and decided to humor him, and the app flagged three spokes that were way under tension while my ear said everything sounded fine. I grabbed my actual Park TM-1 and sure enough those three were sitting around 80 kgf when the rest were near 120, which explained the little wobble I could never fully chase out. I'm not tossing my tensiometer in the trash, but the app got me in the ballpark in about 30 seconds. Anyone here actually trust these phone tools, or am I just getting soft in my old age?
