I keep seeing new mechanics overtightening bottom bracket cups like they're lug nuts

At the co-op last week I watched a guy crank a Shimano cartridge down with a breaker bar and it seized up before he even got the crank arm on, has anyone else noticed this becoming a bigger problem than rusty cables?

Last weekend at our shop, a guy came in with a brand new Ultegra BB that was already making this awful grinding noise. I pulled it off and the threads were all chewed up because he torqued it down with a Milwaukee impact gun. It was barely finger tight on the non-drive side, but the drive side was so cranked that the bearing was dragging inside the shell. I had to chase the threads with a tap and he still couldn't get a refund because the damage was from overtightening.

Oh man, I saw a dude strip a Campy cup clean off last month doing the same thing!
