Hot take: is it worth buying the $80 bearing press or just using a hammer and socket?
Snapped my derailleur hanger on a 2019 Trek Marlin last Tuesday and my cheap tool rounded the bolt head. Managed to get it out with a screw extractor after an hour of swearing, but now I'm wondering if I should drop real money on proper tools. Half the guys at my shop say you can fix anything with a hammer and a socket, the other half say that's how you crack a bottom bracket shell. What's the worst tool failure you've had, and did you replace it with the expensive version?
Hammer and socket works great until you strip a bolt and spend your whole Saturday inventing new curse words like I did. My cheap chain tool exploded on a brand new cassette, so now I just cry once and buy the real thing.
