Tried smoking a whole watermelon for 8 hours like a brisket at my July 4th cookout, and it turned into a hot, pink puddle that my dog wouldn't even touch.
I learned that just because you can put something in a smoker doesn't mean you should, so has anyone else had a totally failed 'smoke anything' experiment that sounded better in your head?

Sounds like you just needed a better recipe, not less ambition.

Started out like that with my own cooking adventures. What finally worked for me was sticking to one new thing at a time instead of going all in on some crazy idea. Tried a simple reverse sear on a steak for the first time and nailed it, then built up from there. Maybe scaling back the ambition bit by bit is the move, not ditching it completely. What kind of recipe were you thinking would fix that dish?

Oh man, that's the perfect example of a plan sounding way cooler than the result. I see this all the time with my friends who get a new smoker or air fryer. They go from normal burgers to trying to smoke a whole cheese wheel or air fry a steak, and it's a total mess. @hayden_rivera has a point about recipes, but sometimes you just gotta accept that some ideas are better left as a funny thought. My buddy tried to smoke grapes once for "smoked wine" and just made expensive raisins.
