Construction is wiping out the best mesquite forests in my area

I went to collect mesquite for smoking last Saturday. Whole sections of the forest were gone. A local told me it's for a new housing project. We need to speak up before all our natural wood sources disappear. Consider using wood from managed forests or even fruit woods instead.

Applewood from pruned trees works great too.

Honestly, the bigger issue is wood sourcing becoming a luxury hobby. When local forests get cleared, it prices out regular folks who just want to smoke some meat. We're losing affordable access along with the trees.

Seeing whole sections of mesquite forest gone is just wrong. I've had to switch to other woods for smoking when local sources dry up. Like @taylor_clark65 said, applewood from pruned trees is a solid choice. You can also look for orchards that sell their cuttings, or check with local tree services for fruit wood. It's a shame we have to find other options because of new building, but speaking up might help.
