Burnt my brisket so bad it triggered the smoke alarm, then the fire department showed up

Last Saturday I was doing a 16 hour cook on my offset smoker and fell asleep on the couch around 3am. Woke up to the whole backyard looking like a fog machine convention because my firebox door had swung open and the coals went crazy. Fire department came by, saw it was just meat on the smoker, and the captain laughed while telling me he'd rather smell brisket than burnt toast. I salvaged maybe 4 pounds off the flat and point, but the bark was basically charcoal. Anyone else ever had a cook go sideways enough to get the boys in red involved?

Oh man, that's brutal! I mean, at least the fire department got a good story out of it, right? Sounds like you basically did a free demo of why offset smokers need a baby monitor or something.
