Burned $160 on a 'competition class' from a guy who never placed above 40th at Memphis in May
So last spring I dropped $160 on a one day brisket class taught by a local guy who calls himself a pitmaster because he has a tent and a Facebook page. The whole pitch was that he had 'competition secrets' and I figured for that kind of money I'd finally learn something about my bark and my stall. Turns out the 'secrets' were wrapping in foil at 165 and spritzing with apple juice, which I could have read in any free forum thread in about 90 seconds. The worst part is he didn't even cook a brisket in front of us, he showed up with four already done and kept them in a cooler the entire time so I never saw his fire management at all. I looked him up that night on the MIM site and his best finish in six years was 41st out of 47 teams. The $160 is gone, but what really bugs me is the 5 hours I'll never get back. Has anybody here actually taken a class that was worth the money, and if so who was teaching it?
