Flea market turntable vs. the $12 fix I almost skipped

Picked up a dusty Dual 1219 at the Springfield flea market for $40. It spun but the auto-return was dead, so I was ready to rip it apart. Then the seller said try a new idler wheel before touching anything, $12 shipped from a parts guy online. I laughed and almost ignored it, but one swap later it works perfect. Now I wonder if half the "broken" gear we buy just needs one cheap part instead of a full teardown. Do you guys usually gamble on the easy fix first or go straight to surgery?
