One kid's haircut changed how I handle nervous first-timers

Back in 2019 I had this 12 year old come in with his mom, shaking like a leaf before I even touched the clippers. He kept saying 'just don't mess it up' over and over, so I stopped and asked him what he hated most about past cuts. Turns out a barber nicked his ear with a straight razor when he was 8 and he'd been scared ever since. I showed him the clipper guard first, let him feel the vibration on his arm, and he relaxed enough to sit still for a clean fade. Anyone else got a client story that changed how you handle the jumpy ones?

Got a kid so worked up one time that he ended up letting his mom cut his hair at home after I tried every trick I could think of? Kinda feel like showing them the tools can make it worse sometimes, just makes the scary stuff feel more real.
