My uncle's straight razor advice finally paid off after a rough Saturday
My uncle used to cut hair in Detroit back in the 80s, and he always told me to strop my blade on an old leather belt before every single client. I thought it was old school nonsense until last Saturday when my 3rd cut of the day started pulling hard on a thick head of hair. I grabbed that belt, did 20 quick passes, and the next cut was smooth as glass. Anyone else have a family trick they ignored for too long before trying it?
Did your uncle ever say why the belt works better than a proper strop? My barber buddy swears by the same thing and I always figured he was just being cheap. He finally showed me last month how the leather grain grabs the edge different than the smooth side of a strop, and now I get why his blades always feel sharper than mine. Old guys know stuff for a reason, even when it sounds made up. Guess that's why his chair is always full and mine isn't.
