My mentor told me to always use a 3 guard for fades and I finally broke that rule

He drilled it into my head for years, but a client with super fine hair needed a softer blend. I went with a 2.5 and the fade looked way smoother. Anyone else have a hard rule they ended up bending?

Honestly, I read that strict guard rules can mess up your blend.

It's the same with most things in life, from parenting to gardening. The best results come from knowing the rules well enough to bend them to fit the situation.

Mentors give you a solid base, but real skill comes from knowing when to break their rules. It's like cooking, you follow the recipe exactly at first. Then you learn your oven runs hot, or your family likes less salt. You adjust. Sticking to the "right" guard or the "right" ingredient every single time ignores what's right in front of you.
