Watched a guy pay for a $3 coffee with a check at the Shell station in Dayton and now I carry cash again
I was standing in line at the Shell on Wilmington Pike in Dayton around 6am and the guy in front of me pulled out an actual checkbook to pay for a $3.10 coffee. The clerk had to call a manager over and it took almost 8 minutes while everyone behind us just stood there. Has anyone else seen paper checks get this hard to use, and do you still keep cash on you just in case?
Worked at a gas station in Columbus for two years and checks were never that hard. The register just needs the check run through the printer for the amount and the clerk writes the DL number on it. Takes maybe a minute tops. That clerk probably just never got trained on it because almost nobody pays that way anymore. The real slowdown is the check approval system the store uses, some of them call a third party to verify funds and that hold time is what eats up 8 minutes. Keeping cash is smart for small stuff, but the check thing is more about stores dropping the training than checks getting harder.
