Used to stand in line at the bank every Friday, now I do it from my couch
For like 6 years I drove to the Chase on Biscayne every Friday to deposit my check from the station, and it always ate up my whole lunch break plus some. Last October I finally set up mobile deposit after my wife kept bugging me about it, and now it takes me 30 seconds on the couch. The part that gets me is I sat on a $35 overdraft fee two years back because I couldn't get to the branch before they closed, and that whole trip could've just been a photo of a check. I know I'm late to this but is there any actual reason to still go inside a branch for a normal deposit?
That $35 overdraft fee hits home, but I still walk into my branch sometimes when I need a cashier's check same day or have an issue the app can't fix. Sitting on hold for 45 minutes kind of makes the drive look pretty good, doesn't it?
Did you ever think about the paper trail part of it? When you deposit at the branch, you hand it to a teller and it's their problem if something goes wrong. With mobile deposit you're the one holding the check, and if the app glitches or the photo is blurry, that money just floats in limbo for days. I had a check get rejected twice last year and had to call in to figure out why, which took longer than any drive ever did. So yeah the couch wins most days, but there's something to be said for watching a person stamp it and knowing it's done.
