Update: realized I'd been paying my electric bill through my bank's bill pay for 4 years without ever checking the account number
Caught it last Tuesday when the power company sent a shutoff notice for $340 despite my bank showing 47 cleared payments, and the rep told me the money had been going to an old account from my last apartment in Tempe.
Went through almost the same thing two years ago, except mine was a water bill and it was going to my old landlord's account because I never updated it after moving. First thing, call the bank and ask for a stop payment on that bill pay entry today, not tomorrow, because anything that hasn't cleared yet can still be stopped. Then call the power company and ask them to pull up the old Tempe account, because if that account had a credit balance from your payments sitting on it, they can transfer it back to your active account. Get the bank to send you a printout of all 47 payments with dates and amounts, because the power company will want proof before they credit you anything. Also file a claim with the bank, since most have a process for misdirected bill pay, though fair warning, some only cover 60 or 90 days back. And go into your bank's bill pay right now and delete that old payee so it can't happen again.
