Rant: that chip reader at my usual cafe got me twice this week

I stopped at the same coffee spot in Portland on Monday and again on Wednesday, both times the chip reader failed mid-payment. First time the screen froze on "authorizing" and I stood there like an idiot with my card in, then it double charged me $11.60. Second time it just beeped and gave me no receipt, so I had to call my bank to dispute it. I know contactless is supposed to avoid this whole dance, but the reader there won't even take tap. Has anyone else had a local merchant with a finicky terminal that keeps messing up charges? It makes me want to just carry cash again.
