Found a hack to avoid ATM fees by using a credit union network in a random gas station

I was stuck in downtown Denver last month with no cash and a $3.50 surcharge warning on every ATM, so I walked into a Shell station and used their credit union terminal through the Co-op Network and it only cost me 50 cents, has anyone else stumbled on a weird fee-free spot like that?

Oh, that's a good find. My buddy Mike ran into something similar a few years back out in rural Nebraska. He was driving through a tiny town and needed cash for a diner that didn't take cards. All the bank ATMs wanted three or four bucks. He found a little credit union ATM inside a hardware store that only charged him a quarter. Said he felt like he'd won the lottery. Now he keeps a list of all the weird spots he finds, like laundromats and grocery stores, that don't tack on a huge fee. It's funny how you can just stumble on a good deal when you're not looking for it.

Funny how those little victories stick with you. I once drove an extra ten minutes to a bank that didn't charge me a fee for using their ATM, only to realize I'd spent more in gas than the fee would have been. Go me. Now I just bite the bullet most of the time, but I still have a soft spot for that one credit union machine at the gas station by my old apartment. It was like a loyal friend who never asked for anything.
