A teller in Boise told me to always check the memo line

I was sending a payment for a car part and wrote 'engine block' in the memo. The teller said she sees that a lot, and it once saved a guy when his payment got lost. The bank used the memo to find his account and fix it. Has anyone else had a memo line actually help sort out a payment mess?

@morgan_butler brings up a good point about bad handwriting, but I'm wondering how often that actually causes problems compared to how often the memo saves someone. Did the teller mention any other examples where the memo line helped fix a payment that had the wrong account number or something similar? Seems like the real value might be in those mixup cases rather than just lost checks.

That's actually a solid tip. I mean, my handwriting is so bad they'd probably read "rent" as "ant farm" and cause a whole new problem. But yeah, making a note seems smart.

Bad handwriting is a real issue though.
