Took me 6 months to realize my oven temp was 50 degrees off

My cakes kept coming out raw in the middle no matter what I did, and after swapping baking powder brands oven thermometers and even moving to a new apartment I finally bought a cheap oven thermometer at a hardware store and discovered the dial was lying to me the whole time - has anyone else had a faulty oven dial drive them crazy like that?

You switched to a new brand of flour before checking the temp?" That's dedication. Did you ever figure out if the dial was just worn out or if it was messed up from the factory?

That whole "raw in the middle" thing is exactly what drove me nuts for almost a year. I even switched to a new brand of flour thinking that was the problem before I finally tested the temp and found it was running about 35 degrees cold. Made such a difference once I got a real thermometer in there.

Honestly I kind of wonder if it even matters that much. I used a beat up old oven for years without ever checking the temp and my cakes came out fine.
