Serious question, do I frost the cake warm or wait overnight?

I baked a lemon cake for my sister's birthday last Saturday and frosted it while it was still a little warm, and the whole thing slid into a puddle on the drive over. Should I have let it sit 4 hours or just stuck it in the fridge first? Hoping someone can save me before her wedding shower next month.
