My sponge cake fell flat 3 times before I figured out the problem

So I was in my tiny kitchen last Saturday trying to make a birthday cake for my sister. First two attempts came out looking like frisbees because I kept opening the oven door to check on it. Third time I realized my baking powder was 8 months expired. Threw it out, bought fresh stuff, and the next cake came out perfect. Has anyone else wasted ingredients on a dead leavening agent before?

Oh man, expired baking powder is the sneakiest kitchen trap out there. I did the same thing last fall with a batch of banana muffins. Opened the oven all excited and they looked like sad little pancakes. The whole kitchen smelled great but the texture was just wrong. My roommate laughed at me and said "well at least the bananas are used up." I ended up checking the date on the powder after that and it was almost a year past. Now I always write the purchase date on the can with a marker so I dont forget again. Its such a dumb mistake but it feels like you wasted time and money for nothing.

@janab82 baking powder doesnt expire that fast. Check the date again, might be a different problem.
