My sister told me my chocolate chip cookies looked like 'sad little rocks'

She said I was packing the dough way too tight and not chilling it enough, so I tried her tip to just drop spoonfuls without pressing them down. Has anyone else had a simple comment totally fix a baking problem?

Packing the dough too tight is a classic mistake. It doesn't let the butter melt and spread properly in the oven. Your sister was spot on about chilling, too. Warm dough spreads out flat before the structure sets, making those thin, sad cookies. A good chill and a gentle drop makes all the difference for a thick, chewy center.

Actually I've had way better luck packing my dough tight. It keeps the shape from falling apart and gives a nicer edge. A quick bake with cold butter works fine without all that extra waiting around.

That 30 minute chill in the fridge honestly turned my whole cookie game around. I used to be team abby308 and pack it down hard, thinking I was doing it right. But @tara745, your point about the butter melting evenly makes total sense now that I've tried it both ways. My last batch came out way less flat and actually had that chew I was after.
