My KitchenAid stand mixer's gear stripped out mid-batch of cookie dough last night.
Has anyone else had this happen and know if it's a common fix or a sign to just replace the whole unit?

Sounds like your mixer decided it was union and took a break. Classic KitchenAid move right there.

The gear stripping is actually a pretty common problem with KitchenAid mixers, especially the tilt head models. Wyattc76's joke is funny, but it's usually a worn plastic gear that's meant to break on purpose to save the motor. You can buy a replacement gear kit for about twenty bucks and fix it yourself with a basic set of tools. There are tons of YouTube videos showing the whole process step by step. It's a way better deal than replacing the whole unit unless the motor is also fried.
