My grandma's simple trick with a toothpick changed my cakes forever

I was visiting her in Cleveland last spring and she watched me pull a cake out of the oven. She just said "you didn't poke it did you?" and handed me a wooden toothpick. She showed me how to test three different spots instead of just the middle. Now I never pull a cake too early or dry one out by overbaking. Has anyone else had a relative show them a tiny trick that made a huge difference?

you didn't poke it" - also works with a toothpick stuck in the middle layers to check if they're fully baked without cracking the top.

My friend Deb tried this trick after she kept splitting her brownie tops. Worked like magic and saved her from serving crumbly messes to her book club!
