Butter temperature argument: room temp vs cold for cookies

I keep seeing people online say you gotta use room temp butter for cookies or they'll spread too much. But my grandma always used cold butter straight from the fridge and her cookies came out perfect every time with that nice thick center. Last week I tried both methods side by side with the same recipe and the cold butter ones actually held their shape better while the room temp ones turned into flat pancakes. Am I missing something or is the room temp rule just for certain recipes like creamed cakes?

Grandma knew what she was doing, must be those online experts using butter that's been sunbathing.

Yeah @barbaraw16 is right, I used to trust the room temp rule but your test just proved grandma knew better.
