Warning: I ditched the star chart app and found 3 things in one night that I'd been missing
Last Friday I left my phone inside, grabbed the cheap 7x50 binoculars I keep by the back door, and just sat on the patio in the dark for about 40 minutes without any app telling me where to look. I'd been leaning on a star chart app for roughly 6 months, mostly to find planets, and I figured I'd be lost without it. Turns out the opposite happened. I spotted the Andromeda galaxy as a fuzzy smudge near Cassiopeia, found the double cluster in Perseus, and caught a satellite sailing right through the Summer Triangle. I think the app had me staring at the screen more than the sky, and I never noticed because it felt like I was doing astronomy. The weird part is I actually saw more in 40 minutes of wandering than I usually do in an hour of following directions. My girlfriend keeps saying I'm just too cheap to pay for the pro version, which is fair. What do you all use to find stuff, paper charts, apps, or just memory?
