Unpopular opinion: I don't think smartphone apps are ruining backyard stargazing
For months I kept reading posts saying using SkySafari or Stellarium makes you a lazy observer. People swear real stargazers just use paper charts and a red flashlight. Then last week I was trying to track down Neptune with my 8 inch Dobsonian. Spent 20 minutes failing with a printed chart. Opened the app on my phone and found it in under a minute. That app pointed me right to a faint blue dot I never would have spotted on my own. Has anyone else found these tools actually help you learn the sky better?

Oh man, I gotta push back hard on this one. Look, I get the appeal of instant gratification, but handing over control to an app is the fastest way to never actually learn the sky. When you rely on a phone to point you to Neptune, you skip the whole process of star hopping and learning the constellations. That faint blue dot you found in under a minute? You probably couldn't find it again a week later without the app. Paper charts force your brain to build a mental map. You learn the landmarks, the patterns, the relationships between stars. That knowledge sticks with you forever. An app just does the work for you. Your mileage may vary, but in my experience, the struggle of finding things the hard way is what makes you a real stargazer.

And after a month with paper charts you can find Neptune without even thinking.
