Tried a red light headlamp for the first time, now my night vision is wrecked

Picked up a cheap red light headlamp from a local hardware store in Tucson last week and figured it would be perfect for reading star charts. But when I turned it on, the red was so bright it lit up my whole yard and left me seeing spots for 10 minutes. I thought red light was supposed to be dim and easy on the eyes, but this one was like a spotlight. Is there a trick to finding a red light that actually works for stargazing, or did I just buy the wrong kind?
