Took 4 tries to realize my red flashlight was killing my night vision

Last month I kept losing faint stars after checking my star chart, and it hit me that the red light I bought off Amazon was way too bright. Switched to a dimmer setting and covered it with a piece of tape, now I can finally see the Milky Way core from my yard in Flagstaff. Anyone else struggled with finding the right brightness for their eyes?
