The old trick with a red flashlight changed my night vision forever
After years of fumbling with my phone's white light and ruining my dark adaptation for 20 minutes every time... I finally tried a simple red film over a cheap flashlight. Cost me maybe 50 cents in supplies from the craft store and now I can switch between looking at my star chart and scanning the sky without losing my night eyes. Anyone else got a budget fix like that for backyard viewing?

Holy cow, a tail light repair kit? Never thought of that. That's genius. I've been using this flimsy red theater gel from a school play years ago. It's all taped up and kind of beat but it works. Might have to hit up the auto parts store now.

Actually red light still affects your night vision a bit even if it's better than white. The trick is to keep the brightness as low as possible. I use a piece of red vinyl from a tail light repair kit and dim my headlamp to the lowest setting before going outside. You tried adjusting the brightness on that cheap flashlight?
