Spent 3 years blaming light pollution, turns out my binoculars were the issue

I got into backyard stargazing about 3 years ago and always thought my views were just mediocre because of the streetlights around my house in Columbus. Kept telling myself I needed a bigger scope or a darker spot, and I even drove 45 minutes out to a state park twice. Then last month a buddy let me try his 10x50s side by side with my old 7x35s, and the difference in the Orion Nebula was wild. Turns out my cheap binoculars had misaligned prisms the whole time, probably from a drop I don't even remember. Now I'm wondering how many other beginners are fighting bad gear instead of bad skies. Anyone else figure out their equipment was the problem way later than it should have been?
