Spent $120 on a light pollution filter and it changed what I can see from my driveway in Columbus
I live about 15 minutes from downtown Columbus so my sky is pretty rough, I'm lucky if I can pick out 4th magnitude stars on a good night. Six months ago I finally dropped $120 on a decent light pollution filter for my 8 inch dob and honestly I was nervous it would be a waste since everyone online says they only do so much. First clear night I pointed it at the Orion Nebula and I could actually make out the shape instead of just a fuzzy blob, the difference was real. M42 went from a dim smudge to showing actual structure and the Trapzium stars popped out clear for the first time from my own yard. The filter also helped on the Andromeda galaxy, which normally is just a faint oval smudge for me. It doesn't work miracles though, I tried it on some faint galaxies last month and still couldn't pull them out, so it's not like flipping a switch. Has anyone here used one of these in a city setting? I'm wondering if I should've gone with a different type for the nebula stuff or if I'm using this one right.
