Shoutout to the guy at the Grand Rapids star party who said bigger scopes are a trap for beginners
I went to a free star party at a park outside Grand Rapids last month and a guy with a tiny 4 inch reflector kept telling folks to skip the big scopes. I figured he was just being a gatekeeper, but then I watched him find M13 and the Ring Nebula in under two minutes while the guy next to us with an 8 inch dob was still messing with collimation. He said most new folks quit because hauling 60 lbs of gear to the yard kills the fun, and a grab and go setup you actually use beats a heavy one every time. I still think there is a middle ground, but his point about the scope you never set up is pretty hard to argue with. Anyone here actually downsized after going big, and do you miss the light gathering?
