Rant: Spent 3 months fighting light pollution until a cheap filter fixed it

I live in a suburb outside Chicago and thought I was stuck seeing only the brightest stars from my backyard. I tried driving an hour out to darker spots but that got old fast after the first week. Read online about light pollution filters for my telescope eyepiece but figured they were gimmicks. Finally grabbed a $35 Orion SkyGlow filter just to see what would happen. First night using it on the Orion Nebula I could actually make out the gas cloud shape instead of just a fuzzy smudge. It's not perfect for everything but it cut the orange glow way down. Anyone else had luck with these things or am I just getting placebo results?

Glad it worked out for you, that orange glow is the worst to deal with...
