My uncle insisted I needed a $200 star chart app, but a free one from Sky & Telescope worked better.
He said the expensive one had 'pro features' I'd need, but after a month of using both, the free version showed me Jupiter's moons more clearly from my Denver patio. Anyone found a simple, free tool that actually beat a pricey recommendation?

Ugh, that's so frustrating! It's the worst when someone pushes the expensive option as a must-have. I've totally been there with photography apps, where the free one did the job better than the fancy subscription. Feels good to prove them wrong sometimes.

Salespeople act like you can't function without the premium package. My free app edits photos just fine without draining my bank account. Their must-have list is usually just a wish list for their commission check.

Remember that article about how companies design apps to make the free version annoying on purpose? They want you to feel like you're missing out. It's not about what you need, it's about making you want the fix. That's why it feels so good to stick with the simple tool that actually works.
