My neighbor's comment about light pollution got me thinking

I was taking out the trash late last night and my neighbor, Mike, was outside too. He pointed up and said, 'You know, I could only see about 15 stars from my driveway before I got those shielded porch lights.' I looked at his house and his lights only pointed down. It made me check my own backyard setup, and my regular floodlight was washing everything out. Has anyone else made a simple switch to dark-sky friendly lighting and noticed a big difference in what you can see?

But is seeing a few more stars really worth the hassle? Most people just need enough light to not trip over stuff.

Honestly, swapped my old floodlight for a downward-facing one last year. The difference in star visibility from my yard was actually shocking.

Wow, that's a huge change. Did you have to get a whole new fixture or just a different bulb and shield? I'm stuck with this super bright one that lights up my whole neighbor's house too. Trying to figure out if I can fix it without a big project.
