My cheap red dot finder died mid-session and I wasted an hour

Last night I was set up for a decent Jupiter viewing, got the scope aligned and everything, then my red dot finder just flickered and went dark. Took it inside, swapped in new batteries, nothing. Checked the wiring and the little board inside is cooked, I could smell it. That was the $20 one from Amazon, had it about 5 months. I ended up taping a paper towel tube to the scope as a makeshift sight, somehow got Jupiter in view but it took forever. Anyone else had a cheap finder die on them and switch to a better one, or is there a trick to fixing these things?
