Mistook Venus for a UFO and called my brother at 2am

Last Saturday I was out with my 8 inch dob in the backyard near Austin and this crazy bright object rose over the treeline. I panicked because it was flickering colors and moving weird, so I called my brother who lives 30 miles away thinking it was a drone or something. Turns out it was just Venus low on the horizon with some atmospheric refraction messing with me, and my cheap finder scope was slightly loose so the image wobbled. Has anyone else been fooled by a planet doing something unexpected like that, and how do you double check before losing your mind?
