I finally got a decent view of the Milky Way from my driveway after a 2-hour drive to a state park.

The unexpected result was that the view was actually worse than from my own yard last fall, because the park's horizon was blocked by tall pines, so what's the best way to check sightlines at a potential dark site before you commit to the trip?

Have you tried using a star map app to check the view?

My buddy Mark tried that last summer in Joshua Tree. He spent half an hour trying to get his phone to work right and just saw a bunch of blurry dots.
