Finally saw what a Bortle 4 vs 5 sky actually looks like after moving 15 miles out of town

I always figured a little light pollution wouldn't matter but wow the difference was night and day. Last weekend at my buddy's place near the national forest I could see the Milky Way core with my bare eyes for the first time. Have you guys noticed a big jump going from one Bortle class to another?

Oh man, yeah that jump from 4 to 5 is way bigger than I expected... I drove an extra 20 miles last month to get to a Bortle 3 spot and it blew my mind. If you can swing it, try to find a dark site map online and push just a little further out, it's totally worth the gas.

How dark was it when you got to the Bortle 3 spot? I've always wondered if the difference between a 4 and a 3 is more about the sky glow on the horizon or if you can actually see fainter stars straight overhead. My local spot is a 4 and the Milky Way is just a faint smudge, but I can't tell if driving further out would really change that.
