DAE remember when we used paper star charts and red flashlights?
My grandpa sat with me on his porch in Amarillo back in 2003 and taught me to find Saturn with a planisphere and a red flashlight, and now my phone app does it in two seconds flat. Kind of miss getting lost up there and having to actually earn it. Anyone else still keep a paper chart around just for the heck of it?
My dad had this old planisphere he kept in the garage and we'd take it camping out at Palo Duro. He'd make me find stuff without any help, no phone, nothing. Took me like an hour once just to lock onto Jupiter and I was so mad about it. Then last summer I pulled up an app and had it in three seconds and honestly it felt like cheating. There's something about the hunt that the screens just kill. I still have his chart in my truck, the corners are all soft and worn from years of use.
