Warning: My entire flock decided to stage a jailbreak on Tuesday
I came home to find all six hens roaming the front yard because the latch on the coop door finally gave out after two years. Anyone have a good brand for a heavy-duty slide bolt that won't rust?

Check if your door frame is still square before you buy a new latch. Mine warped a bit over time, so even a solid bolt had a gap the little escape artists could work on. I ended up shimming the frame with a piece of cedar shingle to get a tight fit, then added the bolt. A lot of hardware fails because the door itself is moving where it shouldn't.

My cat figured out the same trick on a back door last year. Added a 2 inch barrel bolt at the top where she couldn't reach, but the frame was off by a quarter inch so it barely caught. Took a shim behind the strike plate to get the clearance right, solid ever since.
