Visited a small farm supply store in Oregon last month and noticed something odd about their chicken feed

I stopped by a place called Valley Feed out near Eugene and saw they were selling bags of layer pellets with an expiration date from 2022. The owner said it still works fine but I'm not sure about that. Anyone else run into old feed at their local spots and is it actually okay to use?

Nah layer pellets are usually fine past the date, just might lose some vitamins.

@wright.kevin is close but the mold thing is definitely real. I've seen bags that looked fine on the outside but had that musty smell when you opened them up, and the chickens wouldn't touch them. Another thing to watch for is if the bag got any moisture at all during storage, the pellets can start growing stuff you can't even see yet. Better to crack open a few pellets and check for any powdery texture inside before you dump the whole bag in the feeder. If it passes the sniff test and feels dry all through, you're probably good to go.

@wright.kevin is right that they usually still work but there's something else to watch for. I feed a lot of backyard chickens and old pellets can get moldy in the bag if it wasn't stored bone dry. Check for any weird smell or clumps before you use it. If it looks and smells fine I'd still use it but just keep an eye on your birds.
