Tried giving my hens crushed eggshells, now they won't touch their regular feed
Last Tuesday I started mixing crushed eggshells into their morning scratch after reading it helps with calcium. Three days later my girls are literally kicking the regular pellets out of the bowl to get to the shell bits. I thought I was being smart, but now I've got 6 spoiled birds in Tulsa who act like feed is a punishment. Has anyone else dealt with chickens going on a shell strike and how do you get them back on their normal diet?
Six hens in Tulsa kicking pellets around is not a crisis, it's a chicken being a chicken. Scratch and shells taste better than plain pellets, so of course they're gonna hold out for the good stuff. Skip the scratch and shells for a few days, just leave the pellets out, and they'll eat when they get hungry enough. Birds don't starve themselves over a grudge, they just wait you out longer than you'd expect.
