TIL my flock laid 1,000 eggs this year
I just tallied up my egg log from my six hens in my Raleigh backyard, and the number hit me. I always figured we got a lot, but seeing that four-digit total (it was 1,023, actually) made me realize how much food they provide beyond just being pets. It's changed how I see our grocery budget, for sure. Has anyone else been surprised by a big number from their coop?

That is a wild number to see written down. Makes you realize those little daily handfuls really add up over a full year. We had a similar moment last winter when we figured out how much we saved on just not buying eggs at the store, let alone all the baking. It sneaks up on you for sure. Changes how you look at the whole backyard setup.

But you're ignoring the time and feed costs that eat up most of that savings.
